Things No One Gives Microsoft Credit For (But Should)

Microsoft gets more crap than any other company in tech. That's partly because it's given us garbage like Clippy, Microsoft BOB and Windows Vista. And it's partly because it's arguably the most important company in personal computing. Sure, Apple gets all the fawning press for designing pretty, easy-to-use gadgets. But Microsoft is rarely credited for being why mainstream tech has come this far—a computer on every desk, the explosion of the internet, even the idea of a common UI across applications. Even smarmy Mac and Linux snobs have a lot to thank Microsoft for, even if they don't want to. More »

Microsoft Mistakes Browser War for Browser Party, Sends Firefox a Lovely Cake

Just like they did when Firefox 2 dropped, Microsoft has sent the guys over at Mozilla a congratulatory cake. The nerd food was delivered in person and was graciously accepted by the Firefox crew, who managed to hold back snide remarks about the cake's standard compliance and proprietary recipe long enough to take a few pictures. At least Microsoft has a sense of humor about their eroding market share. [Al Billings]

Firefox Passes 500 Million Downloads, Celebrates With a Lot of Rice

Firefox has just hit 500 million downloads worldwide; it is an impressive statistic and we think everyone who works on the project should get a pat on the back. As if their contribution in creating a kick-ass browser was not enough to the world, the Mozilla team is celebrating by raising funds for 500 million grains of rice, which they will give away to poverty stricken nations. Skype Security Flaw Exposed

Researchers have uncovered a potentially critical security flaw within Skype that enables malicious code to be run, given certain conditions. The flaw affects those using IE, and is related to Local Zone security settings Skype uses to render internal and external HTML. Hit the link to find out more. [Ars Technica]

Internet Explorer 7 Marketshare Lagging, WGA Check Going Away

Despite the fact that IE7 ships with every copy of Vista and is a free download for every Windows XP user, the browser only has a marketshare of 20-27 percent. Contrast that with Firefox's 17% share, according to one site, and things are looking dour for Microsoft. So what do they do? No, not improve the browser. They remove the WGA check on the download, which previously required users to have a legit copy of Windows XP before installing. Is this going to dramatically increase usage? We'll see. Frankenfight: IE7 Vs. Firefox 2

In one corner we have Internet Explorer 7. After 18 months of development and a shiny new set of tabs, he's in top shape and looking better than his predecessor ever did. That is, before he entered the ring with Firefox 2.0. Now he's just a cripple with fancy RSS reading. More »

Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 on Day Zero: Better Than Firefox?

IE7 finally ships in its finished form today, and the guys at Laptop Magazine say that it improves on Firefox in some key areas. Among its new features are tabbed browsing just like Firefox, an integrated RSS reader and plug-in support. Sound familiar?
Overall, the interface is far leaner and more polished than IE6 and even more convenient than the beloved Firefox 1.X releases... In the grand battle between Firefox and IE, we think that IE has a bit of an edge in this release, although the Firefox 2 betas we have seen will catch it up a bit. Many of the things we like about Firefox have been implemented in IE7 and have been polished to be more streamlined and useful.
Microsoft says IE 7 is a lot more secure than its predecessor, so that might improve one of the most glaring problems with Internet Explorer 6. But better than Firefox? We're going to have to try this for ourselves. Either grab it for yourself when it's offered up for download soon, or it will be pushed upon you via Windows Update sometime in early November if you have Service Pack 2 installed. More »

Microsoft Says "Peace Out Holmes" To IE For Macintosh

Uh-oh. Better watch out, Mac users. We know how some sites (especially government and collegiate ones) demand you still use stinky old Internet Explorer 5.2.2 on your Mac. Looks like that will have to change because Microsoft has oficially ended IE for the Mac. No more support or development means IE is pretty much dead for Macintosh now. Distribution of the software will cease at the end of 2006, too, so start archiving if you REALLY need it. Even more shocking is that Microsoft is recommending Safari for web surfing from now on. Insane. More »
